Occlusal Therapy Baytown, Houston

Dr. Wooten Offers TMJ Treatment Options

In rare cases, after a thorough TMJ evaluation is performed by our staff, it will be found that a single tooth or a small number of teeth are causing TMJ syndrome symptoms. When the upper and lower dental arches are misaligned, or teeth come into contact with one another in a way that precipitates TMJ syndrome, occlusal treatment may be appropriate at our Baytown, Texas practice, serving Greater Houston and nearby areas.

About Occlusal Therapy for TMJ Syndrome Treatment

In some cases a rotated tooth, a crooked tooth, a malformed tooth, an improperly contoured dental restoration, or other dental problem, can cause teeth to meet or the jaw to come to rest in a way that results in TMJ pain. By repositioning or reshaping the teeth so that they come together in harmony with the TMJ (jaw joint), Dr. David R. Wooten and our staff are able to effectively relieve TMJ symptoms.

Occlusal therapy helps address the misalignment of teeth and the incorrect relation between the upper and lower dental arches, an occurrence known as malocclusion. Occlusal therapy can include occlusal equilibration, which serves to reshape the surface of teeth; the use of Advanced Lightwire Functional appliances, which can correct distortions of the skull and other bones supporting the teeth for more beneficial dental alignment; and orthodontic treatment.

At our Baytown practice, serving patients from both nearby Houston and cities across the country, occlusal treatment for TMJ syndrome is performed only after certain criteria have been met. Diagnostic tests are first performed to determine whether occlusal therapy can address the root cause of the TMJ disorder symptoms. If, after these tests, the jaw is seen to otherwise be functioning properly, excluding the malocclusion, occlusal therapy will be prescribed. If occlusal disharmony is found to be the cause of pain, or is among a number of different causes which are present simultaneously, occlusal TMJ syndrome treatment may be used in combination with other TMJ disorder treatments.
